About Swissdle
Swissdle is a daily puzzle: one Swiss municipality to guess each day, the same for everyone. The next one arrives at midnight, Swiss time.
How to play
Type the name of a town in the search box and pick it from the list. After each guess you get six clues: canton, language, postcode, population, altitude and distance. Green means exact. Yellow means close. Grey means no match. For numbers, an arrow shows whether the answer is higher or lower.
There is no limit on guesses. After 4 guesses you can reveal the large region, after 8 the canton, after 12 the first letter. To give up, click “Reveal the answer” twice; that ends today’s game.
No idea? Clicking the empty search box lists every town you haven’t tried yet.
The clues, column by column
Canton
Green: same canton. Yellow: a different canton in the same large region as defined by the Federal Statistical Office. The seven large regions are the Lake Geneva region, Espace Mittelland, Northwestern Switzerland, Zurich, Eastern Switzerland, Central Switzerland and Ticino. So Lugano against Bern is grey, Zug against Lucerne is yellow.
Language
The town’s language, from the Federal Statistical Office’s language regions. Eleven towns count as bilingual, such as Biel/Bienne, Fribourg and Domat/Ems. Green: same language(s). Yellow: at least one language in common, for example Biel/Bienne against Neuchâtel.
Postcode
The postcode of the main locality. Yellow if it is within 100. The arrow shows whether the answer’s postcode is higher or lower.
Population
Permanent resident population at the end of 2025. Yellow if your number is within 25 % of the answer’s. With an up or down arrow.
Altitude
Metres above sea level at the village centre, not the highest point of the municipality. Yellow within 100 m. With an arrow.
Distance
Straight-line distance in kilometres from your town to the answer, measured between the centres. The needle points the way. Yellow means 25 km or less.
In canton mode the canton is known, so the first column shows the district instead (green or grey). In cantons without districts (AI, BS, GE, GL, NE, NW, OW, UR, ZG) that column is left out.
Modes
- Normal: the 200 largest municipalities by population.
- Hard: the 500 largest.
- Impossible: all 2,110 Swiss municipalities.
- Canton: every municipality in one canton, picked from the “Canton…” menu. The hints there are the postcode area (first two digits), the district (or the number of letters) and the first letter.
Each mode has its own town of the day and its own stats. In every mode, each town comes up once before any town repeats.
Data and sources
Municipalities as of 13.10.2026 (2,110). Sources:
- Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO): official register of municipalities (name, canton, district, language region, large region) and STATPOP (permanent resident population at the end of 2025; municipalities merged since then are added up).
- swisstopo: official directory of localities (postcodes), swissNAMES3D (village centres) and the height service (swissALTI3D).
- Wikidata: names in other languages and well-known altitudes. If Wikidata’s figure is within 120 m of the height measured at the village centre, it is used; otherwise the measurement is.
The FSO and swisstopo data are open government data (free to use with the source credited); Wikidata is CC0. Population, altitude and distance are rounded. For the big cities the well-known old-town postcode is used, for example 8001 for Zurich and 3011 for Bern.
FAQ
Why is my village missing?
Normal only has the 200 largest municipalities, Hard the 500 largest. All 2,110 are in Impossible and in canton mode. Villages that belong to a bigger municipality don’t count on their own, but many can be searched, such as Wengen (Lauterbrunnen) or Verbier (Val de Bagnes).
Why isn’t the postcode mine?
Many municipalities have several postcodes. Swissdle uses the one of the main locality.
Does everyone get the same town?
Yes. One town per mode and day, the same for everyone. The answer stays on the server until you find it or reveal it.
Where are my stats saved?
Only in your browser. On another device, or after clearing the site’s data, you start from zero. More in the privacy policy.
What about municipal mergers?
The list is updated after mergers, but always from a future day on. Answers of past days and of the current day never change.
